The rumor surfaced last week, but we didn't want to believe it. This morning, it became official: Blue Jackets insider Jeff Svoboda is no longer being employed by the organization. This is another massive loss for this team's fanbase.
Just days after the team announced that radio play-by-play man Bob McElligott would not be retained; the team's beloved reporter broke news of his own departure this morning.

This didn't come as a complete surprise, and if the alleged reason for Jeff's departure does turn out to be true; the Blue Jackets just found another way to let the 5th Line down. Maybe in the worst way of all.
And why would we assume anything other than that rumored reason being true? The Disrespected's Michael Arace originally broke the news last week, while the McElligott news was still simmering within the fanbase.
In his article, there was a paragraph (now since deleted) which mentioned that Svoboda would not be retained. His noted reason? The team is choosing to go the "slop" route. In internet terms, that means AI driven content.
There are no words to describe how that makes me feel as a long-standing fan of this team. It feels like an insult on our intelligence, and another slap in the face from an organization that has given us plenty of those over its existence.
We didn't ask for AI driven content. Of course, a computer can put together a press release, or a statement with any given parameters. What is going to be missing, however, is that human touch. Especially from a quality person such as Jeff Svoboda.
Jeff is another outstanding human being.
Living out of the area, it can be tough for me to keep a firm grip on the day-in, day-out happenings within the Blue Jackets organization. I've always tried to give a voice to the 5th Line from the 30,000 foot perspective.
Jeff was the inside man I relied on, because he gave us the most exclusive content. Be it reporting, or interviews; he always did a terrific job. On the couple of occasions that I bumped into him in person, it made perfect sense.
He's extremely approachable and friendly, with one of those faces that glows when he offers a warm smile. Essentially, he's exactly the kind of person that you want within your organization. He represented this team at an elite level.
Now, he's been shown the door. Apparently, in favor of computer generated content. Somehow, this franchise continues to lower the bar in unexpected ways. It does not make sense.
As with Bobby Mac, I'm sure Jeff is going to land on his feet elsewhere. I hope it comes with a massive pay increase. He deserves it. Personally, however: I'm going to miss seeing him cover our Blue Jackets. I believe he's the best in the business-both at his job, and in how he treats people.
