Jet Greaves finishes as a Vezina Trophy finalist.
Wouldn't this be fun? Weston Motz believes that Jet Greaves will establish himself as an elite NHL goaltender this year, and finish as a Vezina Trophy finalist.
Like our first bold prediction, I do think this is very much within his grasp. Last year, Jet posted elite underlying numbers, ranking inside the top-10 in every meaningful category. The issue he had was, he played behind a team that simply gave up too many high danger chances.
That cost him in the "counting stats" department, which kept him well off of everyone's voting ballots. One thing that we know for sure: this team is going to defend a lot better under the guidance of Rick Bowness.
That, combined with Jet's underrated ability, makes me think he has a legitimate shot of emerging as one of the top goaltenders in the game this year. It's going to take a team effort, but we know that's going to be the expectation.
So, if what we have read all summer about everyone buying into this team's culture is true, we could be in for something special this year. Greaves was signed to a 3-year contract extension that pays him $5 million per year over the summer.
With Elvis Merzlikins now out of the picture, this is Jet's crease this season. If this team can defend like they did under Bowness' structure at the end of last season, a Vezina Trophy is well within his grasp. This prediction may be bold, but it's not unrealistic.
Neither is our next one, though it definitely hinges on how the team plays early in this campaign.
