It will go down in Blue Jacket lore as “The Trade”, as it was by far the biggest trade deadline move that the Blue Jackets have ever pulled off. We received Marian Gaborik, Steve Delisle, Blake Parlett, and a 2013 1st round pick from the New York Rangers, in exchange we gave them Derick Brassard, hometown favorite Derek Dorsett, John Moore, and a 6th round draft pick.

That trade told the Blue Jacket faithful that John Davidson and Jarmo Kekalainen believed in what they had in Columbus, that this wasn’t a total rebuild and that they had identified the pieces of this team that they were willing to get rid of. Now they had to get rid of a fan favorite in the process, but sometimes in professional sports it’s just business. Did they want to get rid of Derek Dorsett? Probably not, but in sports sometimes you have to give to receive, and that was the case in this situation.

The new geniuses in the front office also pulled off something that the fans in Columbus will forever be grateful for, as they got rid of Steve Mason. They also found a way to get a proven backup goalie in return in Michael Leighton, plus a 3rd round pick. Highway robbery if you ask me, considering that I would have taken a bag of used pucks to get rid of Mason and they got someone to replace him and a future prospect.
