Background Story: The big story to follow out in Vancouver this year is new coach John Tortorella and how he transforms the Vancouver Canucks in his first year as head coach. Vancouver in the past relied on strong play on offense, whereas Tortorella build the Rangers into a shut-down defensive, shot blocking team. It will be interesting to see how these opposing viewpoints mesh together. In addition, you always have the Roberto Luongo show, who is about the only thing in the NHL that has had more relocation rumors than the Phoenix Coyotes.

Star Power/Personnel: The Sedin twins are the main draw in Vancouver. They are talents on offense and among the NHL’s elite. Former Buckeye, Ryan Kesler, plays an entertaining, gritty form of hockey and is always worth a watch when he is in the lineup. As mentioned above, all eyes will be on Roberto Luongo now that Cory Schneider has been shipped off. The starting job seems to be his for now, but only time will tell on whether he can hold on to it.

Aesthetics: The Canucks are the Padres of the NHL. They have had several different looks over the years that have ranged from good to horrifying. Their current look is not well liked, as the arched Vancouver wordmark clutters the jersey. Their “stick in rink” 3rd jersey is popular with fans and goes to show that Vancouver got their jerseys right the first time around. The color scheme of blue, green, and white is perfect for a team in the Pacific Northwest.
