The Blue Jackets threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Florida Panthers last night. But, they could still only muster 1 point in the standings, losing this one in overtime.
I'm not sure you could draw the game plan up any better than the Jackets played it. For the second game in a row, they absolutely dominated their opponent. They out-shot the Panthers by a wide margin in this game-especially at 5 on 5.
But, it was just one of those nights. They couldn't buy a goal in the first period, and were unable to break the ice until Adam Fantilli fired home a shot through the 5-hole of Sergei Bobrovsky at 13:01 of the second period.
It felt like they had a bit of a lapse in the third period, and they paid for it. The Panthers found the equalizer on the power-play just 1:28 into the third; then won the game on the power-play at 2:20 of overtime.
While it's a disappointing result, it's hard to be unhappy with the way they played. On a lot of nights, they win a game like this by a roughly 4-1 margin. Here are three things that stood out to us.
1. They got goalie'd, again. The story last night was the goaltending. Sergei Bobrovsky stood on his head, especially for the first half of this game. As the Blue Jackets peppered him with shots, Bob found a way to stop almost all of them.
Long range, point-blank, one-timers; you name it. Bob had an answer for everything. This wasn't a night where the Jackets were just throwing everything on net, either. They had some really good looks.
At 5 on 5, they out-shot the Panthers 28-15 last night. They won nearly 60% of the faceoffs. They defended well, for the most part. MoneyPuck liked them for about a 60% chance of winning last night, but they just couldn't solve Bobrovsky. He stopped around 3 goals above expected.
That's hockey, sometimes. The other guy beat you, not much you can do about that. How was he not named the first star?
2. Special teams doomed them. They achieved one of our keys to success: they got a push in the penalty department. Both teams got 2 power-play chances last night. The Panthers scored twice. The Blue Jackets did not score.
Ultimately, that's the difference in this game. No matter the personnel or who is coaching this team, it seems the special teams for the Blue Jackets will always be middle of the pack at best.
Right now, they own the 18th-ranked power-play in the NHL; and the 24th-ranked penalty kill. I'm not sure how that's even possible for a team that can look so dominant at 5 on 5. Baffling.
3. That terrible penalty call in overtime. I'm not blaming this for costing the Blue Jackets this game. After all, they could have killed the penalty and given themselves a chance.
But, without this call, they would have had an even better chance of winning. Sorry ref, this isn't a penalty:

In the end, they were able to pick up 3 of a possible 4 points through Florida this week. That's a positive trip, no matter how you shake it down. You can't win 'em all. With all of the teams around them losing in regulation last night, they still gained ground in the standings. We'll take it.
