The Rick Bowness bump ended emphatically last night, with the Blue Jackets losing 4-1 at home to the Ottawa Senators. It was a critical two points that went the wrong way. Today, we'll break down three moments that helped end the CBJ's four game win streak.
Maybe the biggest issue of the night was the way they started. The Jackets came stumbling out of the gate, which often costs you in meaningful games.
That's exactly what happened last night. The Senators looked like a hungry and desperate road team, while the Jackets didn't have any energy or emotion in their game. As a result, they found themselves down 1-0 just 3:34 into the game.
Tyler Kleven scored the goal, but let's be honest here: this one was on the fourth line of the Blue Jackets. There was no sense of urgency to get the puck into the Ottawa zone, nor any cohesiveness in their play.
They turned it over in the neutral zone, then were way too passive in their own end, allowing Kleven to walk in and shoot the puck past a screened Elvis Merzlikins. Unfortunately, it wasn't the only costly mistake of the period for the fourth line.
Key moment #1: the second Ottawa goal.
The Jackets found their game after the first Ottawa goal, getting the tying marker from Sean Monahan at 7:46. But, their fourth line had another terrible shift that resulted in another Ottawa goal.
On this play, Tim Stutzle is given the entire circumference of the offensive zone to skate with the puck. I think he could have skated around for the rest of the first period without any interruption, had he chosen to do so.
But, he did what good NHL scorers do. He exploited it, found a lane to the net, and beat Elvis Merzlikins with a low shot:

Now, I can't go without mentioning the goaltending here. Obviously, the fourth line did him no favors. But, they need Elvis to make this save. This kind of goal is what continues to break up all of the good he does.
Early in this game, he made several good saves. But, it's that one leaky goal that he seems to give up every time he starts, that really costs this team. This is what separates him from a lot of other goaltenders in this league.
The Jackets would head into the first intermission down 2-1, and with just 5 shots on goal. Suffice to say, they had a lot of things to work out.
The second period saw a change in net, with Jet Greaves taking over for Merzlikins, who left the game due to illness. The team was a lot better in front of him, but there was still one big moment that could have changed the complexion of the game.
Key moment #2: Dmitri Voronkov passes instead of shooting the puck into the net.
Near the end of the first CBJ power-play of the night, Dmitri Voronkov have a golden opportunity to tie this game up. After a net-front scramble that left Senators goaltender James Reimer down and out, he got the puck high in the slot with plenty of time and space.
But, instead of shooting it into the net, he chose to dish to a pinching Damon Severson, with a player in between them. That sliding defender blocked the pass and effectively broke up the play, with this teammates clearing the puck shortly after.
These are the moments that won't show up on the scoresheet. We can blame a defensive zone mistake, or poor goaltending for the loss. But, until this team finds ways to bear down and score goals with this kind of chance, nothing else will matter.
This is the reason Big Boss found himself on the fourth line to start the game last night. Rick Bowness talked about wanting more offense from him. Just shoot the puck, Dmitri.
Rick Bowness added #CBJ had 10 scoring chances in the second, but the difference between tonight and Saturday in Pittsburgh is the Jackets didn't score this time.

Didn't like a couple instances of passing up good looks in the slot: "Shoot the damn thing."
Key moment #3: the third Ottawa goal.
Where to begin on this play?
The Jackets lose a faceoff in the offensive zone. The Senators rim the puck around on a set breakout play, with Zach Werenski actually reading it correctly. But, he's on his backhand, and the puck eludes him. Then, he's a little bit slow to get back.
This leaves the Senators a 3-on-2 rush, with one of the defenders being forward Danton Heinen. They expose him in a big way, putting him in the spin cycle and essentially leaving Ridly Greig with a breakaway chance.
He makes a nice move, but let's be honest: this is another one that the goaltender needs to have. Greig finds the 5-hole on Greaves, and at this point, the game was over.
In summary: there is still maturing to do.
Despite the slow start and the goals that I'm sure each netminder would want to have back, the Jackets were in this game. The issue is those key moments, and that all comes down to confidence.
This is exactly what Rick Bowness was hired to correct. Aside from cleaning up those defensive zone mis-reads, he needs to bring Elvis and Jet back up after bad goals. He needs to get Voronkov shooting the puck.
Fixing those mental mistakes in big moments, is the next step in this team's evolution. Hopefully, they can find a way to mature.
