The Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings unveiled their Stadium Series jerseys today. We were not disappointed. As the kids say these days, the Columbus Blue Jackets 2025 Stadium Series sweaters are "straight fire."
The first element is an alternate take on the cannon logo introduced in 2010-2011. The circular shield and "Columbus Blue Jackets" wording are removed, and the cannon's carriage axle is recolored with the "goal post red" or scarlet to add more color. This superb alteration simplifies the crest while retaining a link to Buckeye branding.
The captain and alternate captains will wear an upper chest patch detailing an "A" or a "C" as usual. However, the marking will be surrounded by an outline of the state of Ohio. This harkens back to the old Cleveland Barons jerseys from the 1950s, which had similar designs on their sleeve jersey numbers. Even if that relation is unintentional, it's an excellent reference to Ohio's extensive hockey history.
The shoulder design, usually the cannon logo on the primary sweaters, is replaced by a "CBJ" wordmark flanked by two hockey sticks, which refers to the unit designation crests that Union soldiers wore. During the Civil War, this crest was worn on soldiers' kepis or official uniform slouch hats. I've wanted the team to return the old kepi alternate logo somehow, but this is at least a great reference.
The piping or striping on the sleeves resembles the stripes used to designate officer ranks, with one chevron indicating a Private-ranked soldier. I don't think we've seen this kind of design on a CBJ sweater to this point, as the focus is usually on the stars and stripes found on the Ohio State flag. So, I'm a big fan of this change that gives this sweater a unique look.
Finally, the lettering "Columbus Blue Jackets" against a backdrop of Buckeye leaves is an excellent, subtle way to include another nod to Ohio State without diminishing the focus on the CBJ branding. ESPN'S Greg Wyshynski loved them, also:
Overall, this design is a solid 10 out of 10. I'm thrilled with the job the design team did, and I cannot wait to see these put into action soon.
