The Columbus Blue Jackets released a new commemorative patch yesterday, for their upcoming 25th anniversary season. Reactions from around the 5th Line were a little bit of a mixed bag, so we put it to a poll on "X".

As you can see, the final tally wound up somewhere in the middle, with the majority of the voters being slightly on the side of positive or generally indifferent. We asked for comments as well, and these results give us a similar reaction.

5th Line reactions...

Clint Beastwood (I'm starting to believe this isn't really his name) gave us a positive answer:

Bassett Buddy liked the logo as well, though he may be looking to change his buying habits in the future:

On the other side of the spectrum, we had one response from Ian, who didn't mince words. His short and to the point response:

We even had one person who came right down the middle. Thomas thought it was a little bit boring:

What do we think?

I'm on board with the general consensus here. The logo is fine, and does what it's intended to do. We get the outline of the state of Ohio with an emboldened "25" within, along with the CBJ logo that depicts a swirling Ohio State flag. The colors look pretty sharp. In particular, I like the metallic sheen to the whole thing. It adds some dimension to the Union Blue background, and gives it a stronger feel.

If I'm looking at the negatives, I can definitely understand where people would dislike it. First, there isn't much homage given to the history of the team itself. Though, to be fair, I'm not sure many of us want to be reminded of that history in the first place.

Also, where is the Civil War tie-in here? In my opinion, the Jackets should be leaning harder into that aspect of their persona. Give this team an "all for one, one for all" mentality in its branding. Something to make sure our opponents know what a Blue Jacket is supposed to signify. A cannon in the background, behind the "25", might have taken this logo a little further into our hearts.

Overall, I think it's fine, if not somewhat uninspired. It gets the 25 year milestone across, and it's not something that is too busy and will make their jerseys look cluttered this season. Maybe our expectations were just higher after those remarkable Stadium Series jerseys?

Man, those were beauties...
