Kirill Marchenko provides no clarity on his future at his first press conference

Many fans of the Blue Jackets have waited nearly three months for Kirill Marchenko to break his silence and talk about his future. Today, he was finally in front of the cameras, forced to answer questions about the rumors that he would not sign an extension in Columbus. Unfortunately, he was very non-committal.

The report that started it all.

At the NHL Draft in June, Kevin Weekes reported just before the Blue Jackets announced their first round pick, that Marchenko would not sign an extension next summer. Weekes read this on-air, directly from his phone; presumably from Marchenko's agent, Dan Millstein.

The ESPN analyst then went one step further, doubling down on X and posting it for the rest of the world to see. This is still his pinned post on his profile.

With the player in his native Russia over the summer, it was hard to get any clarity on the situation. Instead, all we have seen are various trade rumors, which often seem dreamt up by fans of other teams. Today, we hoped to get some clarity from the player himself.

As hopeful as we were for some good news, well... see for yourself:

That's about as non-committal as you will ever see a hockey player be. Kirill dodges every single question about Columbus as best as he can. He talks about wanting to play hockey and be the best he can be, but will not make any statements about his future with the Blue Jackets.

His posture is concerning.

As much as the comments, it's his posture that bothers me. Even though he tries to play the light-hearted "beloved Marchy" card, you can tell he's uneasy. He doesn't want to answer these questions. He's swaying back and forth before they even start coming at him.

This is a guy who is usually very jovial in front of the cameras. He typically does not shy away from answering any questions. This tells me that the writing is on the wall here. He's ready to move on, and I'm not even sure that this team having success this season is going to sway his opinion in any direction.

Whatever the cause may be, he looks like he's on his way out the door. Perhaps we'll get an answer at some point. Or, perhaps not.

All we can hope for at this time is that he does exactly what Don Waddell said he's ready to do: play his butt off this season. A big year from #86 would help both himself and the Blue Jackets figure this situation out, when the final horn sounds next spring.
