This season, the Blue Jackets are going to have plenty of depth at center. Assuming they get Adam Fantilli extended, we expect them to carry six natural centers out of training camp. Likely just missing that cutoff line is Jack Williams, who will have a larger role within the organization this year.
Over the summer, Williams signed a two-year contract extension to remain with the organization. This came after a very solid first season with the Cleveland Monsters, where he scored 15 goals and 38 points in 72 games-then added another 5 points in 9 games in the playoffs.
Originally signed by the Blue Jackets as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2025, Jack has been a good find by the organization. That's not only because of his offensive numbers, which were pretty impressive for a first year pro.
More so, it's because of his all-around game. Despite his sub-6-foot stature, Jack is a hound on the puck; working hard to win battles and then using his skill to turn the game back in transition. This season, he quickly earned the trust of his coaching staff in Cleveland, and took full advantage.
He finished fourth on the team in scoring, while contributing in all situations. As a result, I think he enters this season as the apparent top line center for the Monsters; because Luca Del Bel Belluz will now require waivers to be sent down.
I think Jack is perfect for that role. He has the skill and two-way game that should allow him to thrive against any competition in the AHL. I'm really interested to see how he does in his second year in Cleveland.
At 24 years old, it's hard to call Williams a true top prospect. However, we ranked him 20th on our list this summer, so I do believe there is NHL potential here. While he doesn't have any one elite trait that stands out, he's a bit of a rarity because he is a right hand shot.
And, that shot is the one trait that could land him in the NHL. It goes without saying that he's not going to be a Patrik Laine type of sniper that can score from anywhere in the offensive zone; but, he does have a quick, accurate release that could net him 10-15 goals if given the opportunity.
That shot is stacked on top of an already impressive all-around game. With the whole package in mind, I can see Jack being an effective two-way, bottom six center for the Blue Jackets. Maybe as early as next spring, depending on what the team needs.
For now, he will likely have to settle for a greater role with the Monsters. I'm confident that he will continue to improve upon his already impressive resume this season.
