The Columbus Blue Jackets should consider adding the 6’3″ center if the price is right.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are certainly looking for help down the middle of the ice, and adding a power forward like Charlie Coyle could do just that. Coyle isn’t a superstar, however adding him to the second line behind Pierre-Luc Dubois would give the Blue Jackets a solid 1-2 punch at the center position.

Coyle’s offensive skill set will certainly add some depth scoring which the Blue Jackets definitely need if Alexander Wennberg and Brandon Dubinsky play like they did last season. On top of that, he isn’t afraid to block a shot as he blocked 63 of them last season which head coach John Tortorella will certainly be a fan of.

Coyle would also help in the faceoff circle. Last season he put up a career high 52.2% on faceoffs. It’s difficult to judge his value and it may be difficult to get him away from the Minnesota Wild as he was their key return piece in the Brent Burns trade a few years back.

Paul Fenton recently took over as the new general manager of the Wild, and as a result he may be more likely to shake things up a bit which could certainly benefit the Columbus Blue Jackets.

It’s possible the asking price for Coyle starts with a roster player and draft pick or prospect. The Minnesota Wild are likely still looking to be a playoff team next season, so it’s unlikely they’d want to sell him but rather make a “hockey trade”.

A potential piece the Blue Jackets could try to use in a trade would be Boone Jenner who’s losing value annually as he gets farther and farther from his 30 goal season. While many fans would be upset losing Jenner, Coyle would certainly be an upgrade offensively.

Next: Is Pierre-Luc Dubois the next Ryan Getzlaf?

The Columbus Blue Jackets will have a lot to consider this off-season, and if they can Charlie Coyle should certainly be one of those considerations.
