Columbus Blue Jackets Zach Werenski Breaks Record for Goals in a Season
The 20-year-old defenseman breaks a Columbus Blue Jackets record.
The kid keeps on breaking records. The Columbus Blue Jackets single season goal record was 12. That was before tonight.
Now the record is 13 goals in a season and there is still plenty of time for Zach Werenski to extend his franchise record. Following his game winning goal in the second period of the game against Vegas, Zach Werenski is now the Columbus Blue Jackets highest scoring defenseman in a season.
Breaking a record previously set by Brian Berard, Werenski sets one of what will surely be many Columbus Blue Jackets franchise records.
The 13th goal comes in only the young defenseman’s 62nd game of the year. With 15 games left on the CBJ schedule, Werenski can put some distance on this record.
Surprisingly the person most likely to catch him is his partner Seth Jones. Jones has scored 10 goals this season and is getting more favorable power play time recently. We may have our own McGuire-Sosa goal battle on the same pairing as the Columbus Blue Jackets head down the stretch.

Rover Werenski
Notoriously stubborn coach John Tortorella could never coach a dynamic, young player like Zach Werenski. The hockey media wouldn’t have it.
But just watching one Coumbus Blue Jackets game and you can see the maturity of Torts and Werenski.
Torts is allowing Werenski to roam around the offensive zone and take defensive task off his plate. It has allowed him to drive offense and take chances that have clearly led to goals. Werenski now with 13 goals is third in the league in defenseman scoring. His 30 points on the year are very impressive as well.
Zach Werenski has not seen the power play production this year that he saw in 2016-2017, but it has not stopped him form netting goals.
Werenski has a serious opportunity to lead the NHL in defenseman scoring for not just this year, but for many years to come.
