Now in the hot seat, contract negotiations. This whole category could be about Sergei Bobrovsky and the wild ride his negotiations took us on. There were other contract negotiations this offseason, believe it or not. Here are the major re-signs of the offseason, and I might have to even slip in a re-signing that did not occur, which may affect the grade for this category.

Columbus Blue Jackets Re-Sign Goaltender Curtis McElhinney” – On the 24th of May, the Blue Jackets resigned McElhinney to a one-year contract. At the time of the signing, Kekalainen basically proclaimed that McElhinny would be the back-up for Bobrovsky.

"“Curtis is a solid pro who was one of the best goaltenders in the American Hockey League this past season” said Kekalainen. “He is a veteran goaltender with NHL experience and we believe he’s earned the opportunity to be a part of our team in 2013-14.”"

Blue Jackets re-sign Artem Anisimov to three-year contract extension” – A month later, on June 26th, the Blue Jackets re-signed a key component, Artem Anisimov.

"“Artem is a big part of our team and we’re very pleased to sign him to this extension,” said Kekalainen. “He’s an extremely dependable two-way center with a dynamic skill set and we think he will be a key contributor to our club in the coming years.”"

Matt Sexton covered the Anisimov signing for Union and Blue – Signing of Artem Anisimov First Step in Offensive Overhaul

"“It is obvious to anyone who watched Anisimov play, the Russian winger possesses a tremendous amount of talent. Before Anisimov’s arrival in Columbus, I cringed when the Jackets went to a shootout.”"

Blue Jackets sign head coach Todd Richards to a one-year contract extension through 2014-15” – Not only were players getting re-signed and contract extensions, but the Coach as well. Head Coach Todd Richards received a nice vote of confidence with a one-year contract extensions.

"“We believe Todd is one of the top young coaches in our game and he has had a steadying influence on our team since taking over as head coach in January 2012,” said Kekalainen. “The hard work put in by Todd and our coaching staff has been a big reason for our team’s improved play and we are excited that he will continue to serve as our head coach.”"

Blue Jackets re-sign Sergei Bobrovsky to a two-year contract” – Matt Sexton of Union and Blue put it best, “After a final weekend of wild twists and turns, the Sergei Bobrovsky roller coaster ride finally ended Sunday.” If this signing did not occur, this category would easily be receiving an F, but it did occur, thanks to JD and Jarmo. Not to mention, it was a great deal for both parties.

"“Re-signing Sergei Bobrovsky was a top priority for our organization and once again ownership has given us the resources to build a winning team. Bob is a terrific player and an outstanding young man with a work ethic that is second to none and was a well-deserved winner of the Vezina Trophy this season as the NHL’s top goaltender,” said Kekalainen"

Comeau returns to Jackets on a one-year deal” – Comeau was a player that came over to the Blue Jackets during the trade deadline from the Flames. Kekalainen only gave up a 5th round pick to acquire the struggling forward. If Columbus is the right team for Comeau, he could revive his young career and be a strong addition for the Blue Jackets.

"“Blake is a dependable two-way forward who combines physical play with ability in the offensive zone,” said Kekalainen. “We liked what we saw from him at the end of last season as he fit in very well with our team and we’re pleased to have signed him to this extension.”"

One signature that the Blue Jackets did not get was Vinny Prospal. One things us fans need to remember is that the NHL is a business, and team management made what they thought was a good business move by not renewing the contract of Prospal. It is unfortunate, but it is part of the game.
