Columbus Blue Jackets 2023-2024 player review: Patrik Laine

Looking to finally establish himself as a reliable, elite player in the NHL, Patrik Laine again struggled to be a well-rounded NHL player. Instead, this season raised big questions about his future.

Consistency is key to success in so many aspects of life. One thing that is consistent for Patrik Laine: he is consistently inconsistent.

Similar to last season, Laine had spurts of good play and stretches of inconsistencies, which forced Head Coach Pascal Vincent to limit his ice time.

Unfortunately for Laine, his season was cut short very early due to injury. He missed time with various ailments, then entered the NHL Player Assistance Program to help him with his mental health.

He would only play in 18 games in 2023-2024, scoring just 6 goals and 9 points.

The experiment of having Laine play center should be over. It has not been successful and should not be forced any further. He struggled to find his game when in the middle of the ice. Laine is naturally a winger. He needs a center iceman (like an Adam Fantilli) who can compliment his game.

Laine is signed at $8.7 million AAV over the next two seasons. Assuming he is able (and wants to come back), he will be a mainstay in the Blue Jackets top six forward group.

Hopefully the Blue Jackets can surround him with players who can complement his game and won’t put too much pressure on his shoulders going forward.

The new general manager may look to move on from Patrik Laine via trade. While his current trade value is low, the new GM may not have patience with Laine.

Maybe Laine wants a fresh start, which may be why he listed his downtown condo for sale recently. While I don’t think he will get traded, it is still within the realm of possibility.

Patrik Laine missed most of the season and, when he did play, he continued to contribute consistently. The same issues haunted Laine and with him missing time due to health issues, this season should be considered a failure for Laine.
