Brendan Gaunce was a part of the Blue Jackets organization for three seasons from 2021-2024. As a free agent, he signed a 2-year deal with the Minnesota Wild in the summer of 2024. He spent one season in Minnesota before being traded back to the Blue Jackets during the summer of 2025.

The addition of Gaunce was intended to bolster the forward depth within the organization. He would have two main roles over the 2025-26 season. First, he would be a veteran for the Cleveland Monsters, as he was expected to spend most of his time with the AHL affiliate.

Second, he would be a call-up to the Blue Jackets in the event of an injury. He was not reacquired to play a specific role within the Blue Jackets lineup. He was primarily added to provide depth within the organization.

Gaunce started the season with the Cleveland Monsters. Due to injuries, he was recalled on November 21st and spent the next 2 months with the Blue Jackets.

He played a total of 25 games for the Blue Jackets occupying the 4th line center position. He was primarily used as a checking forward and on the penalty kill. Once some players returned from injury, Gaunce was sent back down to Cleveland. He would not make another appearance for the CBJ the rest of the season.

Gaunce is an unrestricted free agent this summer. If he is re-signed, it will be again to fill the same role he had this season: be a veteran for the Monsters and a call-up for the Blue Jackets.

Depending on the offseason moves made by Don Waddell, it’s possible that Gaunce could return to the organization. However, I could see it going either way. I say there is a 50-50 chance that he returns to the organization for the 2026-27 season.

Final season stats: 25 games played, 2 goals, 4 assists, 6 points, 12 PIM, -1, 29 shots on goal, Overall grade: B

Gaunce was brought in for additional depth to the forward corps in Columbus. His primary role was to be a veteran player for the Cleveland Monsters and be a mid-season call-up for the Blue Jackets if needed. He served that role as intended. He did not exceed his expectations, nor did he fall short of them either. He gets a B because he served his role as intended.
