The Columbus Blue Jackets lose in their biggest offensive battle of the season to the Calgary Flames 9-6, dropping their second contest after blowing a 2+ goal lead.

Cam Atkinson once again was on fire for the Columbus Blue Jackets (No pun intended). Scoring another hat trick, Atkinson is electric when wearing the alternate Blue Jackets jersey. He also extends his point streak to 11 games, while leading the team in scoring. Although Atkinson’s performance wasn’t enough for the Jackets.

The Flames were able to put 8 goals past Sergei Bobrovsky before Joonas Korpisalo had to come in relief. Korpi would give up a goal himself before the game would end. This continues the talk of the Blue Jackets seasonal goaltending woes. Bobrovsky had a solid month in November, but had a shaky start to the season, and it looks like it won’t get easier from here.

Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan both came away with 4 points each for the Flames. It comes as no surprise as when 9 goals were scored, these two were all over the Jackets defense tonight.

More from Union and Blue

David Savard continues to struggle with consistency, and Zach Werenski still does not seem to be at 100% health. It’s worth a mention Pierre-Luc Dubois left the game early with an injury. The Jackets offense leaves little to be desired with 10 different players registering a point this game, but the defense continues to struggle time and time again.

As I’ve mentioned before, the Jackets have a huge issue on the back end. Whether it be the goaltenders having horrific evenings, lack of will, or just defensive ineptitude, there needs to be a huge change to this Jackets defense or goaltending tandem.

It’s a long road ahead for this Jackets team. The Jackets will remain in the 2nd place position in the Metropolitan Division, but the other teams are gaining on the Jackets quickly. The Penguins took down Colorado, and they face the Islanders for 3rd place spot in the Metro on Thursday.
