Columbus Blue Jackets prospects Carson Meyer made his Ohio State Buckeye debut.

Although there was no NHL action on Friday night, there was still hockey for Columbus Blue Jackets fans to watch. The Ohio State Buckeyes made their season debut Friday night in the desert against the Arizona State Sun Devils.

In the Buckeyes 3-2 win, Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Carson Meyer scored what would end up being the game winning goal and had the primary assist on the first goal of the season for OSU. It was a great start to the year for the Miami transfer who had a nightmare 2017-2018 season due to an undiagnosed tapeworm that ruined Meyer’s season.

The Buckeyes swept the Sun Devils and are ranked number one in the country.

The number two team in the country, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, opened their season with two games in the annual Ice Breakers tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Captain of the Irish, and 2016 CBJ 2nd Round pick Andrew Peeke, contributed in a huge way for his squad with four assist over the weekend.

Peeke, who also played for Team USA at the World Junior Championships last year, only scored 14 points last year so the offensive outburst was a bit surprising.

Fans will get to check out more of both Peeke and Meyer as NBCSN announced they will be broadcasting the November 3rd matchup between the nation’s top two teams.

Other Notes

  • Goalie prospect Peter Thome gave up two goals on 18 shots in North Dakota’s 2-1 loss to Bemidji State.
  • Kale Howarth was held scoreless in his NCAA debut for the UConn Huskies. The Huskies beat West Point 5-2.

Foudy Ends it in OT

The Columbus Blue Jackets first round pick from this summer continues to show off the speed his is known for. Liam Foudy decided enough was enough and ended the Knights Friday night game in overtime by just blowing by everyone and burying the puck.

Liam also scored the only two goals the Knights put up on the board in their Sunday loss to the Guelph Storm. Foudy had three goals in three games this week.

Out in the Western Hockey League, Trey Fix-Wolansky had a goal and two assist in the Oil Kings four games this week. Trey finally cooled off after a hot start to the year.

The Oil Kings success seems to be directly tied to Fix-Wolansky’s scoring. This week the Oil Kings went 0-4 and were outscored by 14 goals. Trey is still tied for third in the WHL in scoring though even after a rough week.

Monsters Update

Be sure to keep track of William Espy as he covers the Cleveland Monsters all year long. The Monsters cooled off a bit as they were swept by the WBS Penguins this weekend.

With only two Columbus Blue Jackets games this week, look to the minors and college hockey to fill your hockey fix. Plenty of future Jackets to watch this week.
