With the Columbus Blue Jackets season over it’s time for the Union and Blue staff to give their evaluation of each player’s year.

A new year and a new contract is exactly what Boone Jenner needed after the 2018 season. The Columbus Blue Jackets winger is coming off of a pretty unfortunate season that started it’s unfortunate run sometime in the summer last year.

Boone’s 2017 training camp was derailed after suffering a back injury in the offseason. It caused Boone to miss training camp and get off to a slow start last season. Boone didn’t play until late October and was barely noticeable for the first half of the season.

In his first 43 games, Jenner only produced 11 points. And it wasn’t for a lack of ice time. Boone was regularly playing more than 18 minutes a game.

The slow start for Boone was a reflection of the team’s performance as well. It wasn’t until later in the year that both Boone and the Columbus Blue Jackets looked like what was expected of them from the onset of the season.

In the final months of the season though Boone turned it on. He had 20 points in the final 31 games of the season including a six game point streak during the Jackets 10 game winning span in March. Boone continued that solid run in the playoffs with three points in six games.

All the while, Bonne continued to play a physical, punishing role in the defensive end. He started his shifts in the defensive zone 58.4% of the time. He also was a solid penalty killer all season.

New Contract, New Year, New Expectations

With the poor start to the year for the team and missing training camp, the first months of the season for Boone were nothing but clunky. After working out of the funk, Jenner produced at a great rate and looked like the player we all expected.

Boone just signed a four year contract for $3.75 million. That is a great price if he can perform like he did over the final 35 games.

With a full offseason and training camp, Boone should be able to come back and look like the solid second line winger the Jackets need him to be. He won’t be posting 30 goals like he did in 2015, but he can get close. It’s important to remember that Boone just turned 25 years old as well and has his best years ahead of him.
