The Columbus Blue Jackets snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a comeback 3-2 overtime win in Toronto.
We have to be honest. We did not see that Columbus Blue Jackets comeback coming. And if you are being honest, you didn’t either. The CBJ haven’t shown us anything in the last month and a half to make us believe the could come back from a 2-0 deficit with a period remaining. Let alone with five minutes left.
But thats exactly what they did. The Jackets stun the Toronto with the eyes of the hockey universe on them with their comeback win last night. A scoreless first period is exactly what the CBJ were looking for as they faced a tough team on the road in their second game of a back-to-back. The tight checking game kept the Jackets right where they wanted to be heading into the second.
The Maple Leafs got on the board first after a great deflection by James van Riemsdyk off of a Roman Polak puck thrown at the net.
The 18th goal of the year for JVR put the Leafs in the drivers seat. Four minutes later Josh Anderson took a slashing penalty and the momentum was firmly with the home squad. The fast, skilled Leafs took advantage and scored on the power play 30 seconds later to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Jackets were getting decent looks and had more high scoring opportunities than the Leafs in the first two periods. They just couldn’t seem to put the puck in the back of the net. It seemed to be one of those nights where the Jackets wouldn’t be getting a goal.
Third Period Madness
That was the feeling late into the third period as well. Until an unlikely player got on the board with less than five minutes remaining. Jordan Schroeder threw the puck to the net and the Jackets finally got some puck luck. The biscuit hit Fredrik Andersen and ended up in the air. It came down behind Andersen and ended up in the net for Schroeder’s first goal of the season.
Currently the goal is credited to Nick Foligno but according to yours truly and Brian Hedger, the goal should be Schroeder’s
So now you’re telling me there’s a chance!?! Four and a half minutes left and down one. The Jackets continued the push for another minute and half until two of the hottest players for the CBJ connected for the game tying goal.
Seth Jones took the puck down the right wing side and made a great pass to the rookie Pierre-Luc Dubois. Dubust, as fans have ironically started to call the stud center, buried the puck in the net to tie the game at two and force overtime.
The ball was rolling downhill and momentum was firmly on the side of the Jackets heading into overtime. A wild extra period ended three minutes in when William Nylander made a terrible defensive play that left Artemi Panarin open to tap in a Zach Werenski shot.
The comeback was complete and Toronto Maple Leafs fans were stunned. Two zombie points for the Columbus Blue Jackets as they seemingly come back from the dead. The game was a shocker for not only the fans in Toronto, but for those in Ohio as well. The fight the Jackets showed was something we had been begging to see for months.
The Columbus Blue Jackets will now practice in Toronto before heading to Buffalo for their game on Thursday against the Sabres.
