The Columbus Blue Jackets ended 2014 on a high note but they have started 2015 by getting blown out on the road against the Arizona Coyotes. The Blue Jackets ended up 10-1-1 in December 2014, they are now 0-1 in January 2015 and will be licking their wounds on the plane ride to Colorado.
The Columbus Blue Jackets opened up the first period like a team that was participating in its first road game in 18 days. It seemed as if they had gotten a little too comfortable in the friendly confines of Nationwide Arena. Columbus looked flat, just like it had back on December 22nd against the Nashville Predators; they didn’t play well in front of Sergei Bobrovsky, and Officer Bob wasn’t too hot himself. Tobias Rieder of the Coyotes was the only one to tally a goal in the first period, after 20 minutes the Blue Jackets found themselves down 1-0.

The Blue Jackets displayed the look of a team that we have come to know and love in the last month early in the second period. The few highlights that the Blue Jackets had came in these few moments at the start of the period. Fedor Tyutin scored his first goal of the season, then 2:04 later James Wisniewski kept Columbus hot on the Power Play. That’s when everything went south, and the Coyotes scored the next three goals of the period making it 4-2 at the end of 40 minutes.
But, Arizona wasn’t done.
They scored the first two goals of the third period as well and with a little under 15 minutes to play in the third period the game was theoretically over. Bobrovsky was chased after a beautiful goal by the Coyotes and the Blue Jackets fell to 0-1 in 2015.
The Arizona Coyotes came to play tonight, and except for 3-4 minutes of the 2nd period, the Columbus Blue Jackets did not. This ended up leading to an embarrassing night for the Blue Jackets, something that hasn’t been happening to them very often lately.
The good news is the Blue Jackets have a game tomorrow night against the Avalanche, they will have a chance to erase this bad memory and start another streak for January. If they come out like they did tonight, and if Bobrovsky starts and plays like he did tonight, Columbus could have more losses in 2 games than they did in all of December. Here is to hoping the Blue Jackets forget about this stinker quickly and come out and make amends tomorrow.
