Game #11: Third period woes doom Columbus Blue Jackets, fall in Jersey
The Columbus Blue Jackets looked to end a four game losing streak and took to the road for the first time since their California trip, and played two solid periods of hockey. Unfortunately, the game is a 60 minute one, and the Devils took advantage in the final period – the Jackets’ worst one up to this point in the year – and a two goal third period propelled New Jersey to the victory, and sent CBJ to three games below .500.
Ryan Johansen saw his franchise-tying point streak come to an end, but injury-replacement Brian Gibbons looked good on the ice, and recorded two points – both assists – first assisting in the opening goal of the game, netted by Jack Skille and again on the final goal scored by Columbus in the second period, in which both Gibbons and Jack Johnson fired at Cory Schneider, and Nick Foligno put back the rebound, which at the time put the Jackets up 2-1.
However, it would be Adam Henrique and Adam Larsson who would score in the third period, with Henrique’s tying the game at two and Larsson’s, in just his third game of the year, put them up for good. Between the two teams, three power play goals were scored, two by New Jersey and Foligno’s for Lumbus.
Anton Forsberg actually played really well in his NHL debut, shutting NJ out in the first period, and stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced. His counterpart in Schneider stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced.

If there’s any silver lining here in this fifth straight loss, it’s that it really was the best game the CBJ have played during this losing streak. Guys like Gibbons and Skille are getting valuable time on ice, and are stepping up in the place of injuries and, when it comes the middle of the season or home stretch, they won’t be star struck on the ice. They’ll have been there before and it’ll be no nerves to get out.
The Jackets will get to regroup and get ready for another chance to overcome injury and break this streak Tuesday, when they welcome in Carolina to NWA.
