To review how we finished the last post
1] Colorado won the greatest percentage of their total overtime games, winning 7 of 11 in OT and 9 of 11 in SOs for a total of 73% winning in overtime situations.
2] In the West, Minnesota won the most SOs at 11 of 20 or 55% .
3] Dallas won 4 of 5 games won in the OT period or 80%. This is a pretty small sample. Vancouver won 7 of 9 or 78%.
For Reference: Columbus won 2 of 4, or 50% in the OT period; and 4 of 9 in SOs, for 44%
Colorado, 22; Minnesota, 24; Dallas 16; All did not make the playoffs. And of course Columbus, at 13. Vancouver and LA, both had 24 games[ winning 63% and 37% respectfully] that went to OT and were in the playoffs.
St Louis which went to OT 18 times and was ranked 2nd in the West won only 39 %. Nashville which only had 16 extra inning games, but was successful in winning only 50%, was ranked 3rd in the West and obviously made the playoffs .
You would think that the elite ranked goal tenders would shine in the shoot outs. No so much when it comes to shoot out wins/losses. 2011-2012 data
Team Player W – L Shots against Goals % saves
LA Quick 6-8 47 16 .660
Nash Rinne 4-5 30 9 .700
Phoenix Smity 6-8 46 15 .674
St Louis Halak 3-7 32 9 .713 Elliott 1-3 14 5 .674
Minnesota Harding 5-3 23 5 .703 which won so many shootouts Backstrom 5-6 32 15 .531
And Columbus
Columbus Mason 2-2 10 4 .600 Sanford 2-3 15 5 .667 and for your added enjoyment
Bobrousky 1-2 8 4 .500 2010-2011 Bobrousky 1-4 17 9 .471
What to make of all this? Well, I’m thinking that the team in fron of the goalie may have a little something to do with how successful he is. When in a shootout, it may depend more upon goalie reflexes and hockey sense.
But a shootout is not won by just stopping shots, the shooters must put the puck into the goal. In the West Minnesota has 3 players with greater that 50% success. {In the East NJ & Boston each have 3. Note Ilya Kovalchuk of NJ had a 76% success rate scoring 11 goals in 14 shots} In fact no other team in the West has more than 1. No wonder they won so many shootouts.
Columbus’s Shootout record
Nash 4 goals in 9 shots = 44%
Letestu 2 goals in 5 shots = 40%
Atkinson 1 goal in 1 shot = 100%
Wiz 1 goal in 2 shots = 50%
After 2 posts and a bunch of data my summery is this. If I were the Blue Jackets, I would be watching a lot of film and see what the keys to the successful completion of the tasks might be for me. This process is called benchmarking. All successful companies and people use this technique.
If anyone can get the Blue Jackets attention, suggest this concept to them!
