Stat Rats – Don’t jump the ship yet, There is Still a lot of hockey to be played

It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and a rough start to the season, but let’s not get a head of ourselves quite yet, the SS CBJ hasn’t quite hit the iceberg yet!

Call it what you want, our team is too young, the new guys haven’t had the chance to gel with the old guys, not enough intensity, bad bounces, whatever. Fact of the matter is aren’t winning games, but that doesn’t mean the seasons over yet, check this out!

I was brought on here to add a little more flavor in the Stats department and hopefully with that, add a little hope to our gloomy beggining of a season.

First things first, lets take a look at the “% of the season” column – we are only 7% through the season (heck Detroit is only at 4%). I’m no mathemetician (or mathelete) but 7% doesn’t seem like a lot of hockey, and it’s not. We have over 70 games left in the season and as any blue jackets fan can attest, a lot can happen in 70 games (look at the end of last season – a lot happened in 10 games).

Next, lets move onto points, it may not look pretty but it’s closer than you think. The Blue Jackets are not a flash team and will probably never blow our division out of the water ( a pitfall of living in the Western conference).  Like it or not our division is tough, probably the toughest around and our best bet in a division like this is to play tough, keep the points close and hope the hockey gods turn away from us for a second and start raining on someone elses parade.

We are only 3 points behind St Louis and 4 points behind Nashville for 4th and 3rd place respectivly. That’s nothing, thats a win and an OT loss or even just 2 wins. Now yes Detroit and Chicago may be a little harder to catch up to since they are a little more consistant, but if we can Win two games in a row (let’s say against Detroit tonight and Tuesday) we could potentially catch up with Nashville for 3rd place and be only a game or two away from the top.

If we can do that we are still under 10% through the season, which leaves a ton of hockey left!

On a final note, does anyone else feel like Tonight is the night we get that first win? I know we have been saying that the past few games, but it’s Columbus. Wouldn’t it just make sense that we can’t win our first 6 games but somehow we go into Joe Louis Arena and beat the redwings?
