Sunday Skate-Sharpening

It’s the end of the week…it’s been a busy one.

I was invited to join Frank and Tim on Rink Side Rants, where we talked about all things hockey and played a weird game of NHL Survivor.  Of course I’m a fan of RSR, so this was a big deal for me.  My first time on the show was a fun time and I hope they’ll invite me back.  And by the way…The Jackets were the last team on the Island.  I thought maybe, I’d go home with a prize but no such luck.  Other people go home with a million bucks and cars.  I was thinking maybe a t-shirt but nope…just bragging rights and that’s good enough for me.  That’s what people say when they really wish there would’ve been loot.  Even a stupid fridge magnet is better than nothing.  Crap.

This is cool stuff, too.  In January, I contacted Jeremy Werner, a former pro-football player now personal trainer and asked some questions about training like an NHLer would during off season.  He was interested, enthusiastic and eager to take this “project” on. I am on week 3 of fundamentals…strength and over-all fitness.   The last thing anyone wants is an injury or (certain death…heart or lungs exploding) so we’re starting with a good all-around basic fitness routine.  After several weeks, the program will shift to more athlete/NHLer specific exercises.  Jeremy has also written a nutrition plan, because you won’t find too many NHLers on cheese stick benders.  By the way, wanna really freak out a trainer?  When he/she asks, “Do you eat breakfast?” Answer “Do Oreos count?” and watch them fold up slowly in fetal position.

For more about Jeremy Werner http://dptraining.com/about/jeremy/   And soon, I’ll have loads of updates, photos and stats on how I’m doing on my NHLer off-season workout project on this site and my Facebook page (which is still under construction…oh how I need an Internet nerd…it’s coming…really.)  We’re both on Twitter as well.

…And, the fine people at The Mount Vernon News picked up the story on Jeremy’s plan for me.  They will follow us and the progress, and I will even have the sports editor of the paper join me next week so he can see what the workout is like.

And, it was a perfect weekend for the Union Blue.  A shut out win over Detroit, and in their house, no less.  It was a “Mason Golden” night.  This, was a good test and a good rebound off a loss to the Hawks last week.  Umby very near broke a stick over his head in frustration…we’re feeling ya, pal…but you did it…it’s all good.

And a sell-out crowd at Nationwide Arena saw the Blue Jackets get it together (and keep it together) and pull a win out over Edmonton.  We were very near seeing possible hat tricks from Umberger and Huselius.  It’s good to see Juice wake up and play like he’s able.  Of course, I’m amazed with Umberger… he shows up every game and is probably the  hardest working player on that team, so we’re spoiled and we expect it from him.  I’m impressed, but not surprised.   Keep it going, boys.  Penguins are next…
