Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Vitaly Abramov is in a bit of a pickle. The reigning QMJHL MVP could use a little more time to develop, but he really doesn’t have much left to prove in juniors.

What makes Vitaly Abramov’s situation interesting is the NHL-CHL agreement. Because of this, Abramov must either return to the QMJHL or play with the Columbus Blue Jackets this season. Despite playing four professional games last season, he is not eligible to play in the AHL to start the year.

Returning to the Gatineau Olympiques, his QMJHL team, wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but it would be nice to see how he would do in a full AHL season.

The only knock on Vitaly Abramov is his size. He would’ve likely been selected higher in the 2016 NHL draft if he was a little bigger.

Prediction: Back to the Q

I think Abramov will head back to the QMJHL this season, mainly because of the Jackets depth at wing.

There won’t be much room at either side with the arrival of several players. The addition of Tyler Motte, and the possibility that Sonny Milano is ready for the NHL, doesn’t help Abramov’s case either.

Coming off of two dominating seasons in the QMJHL, we all know that he can rack up the points. What he can work on, however, is his physical play.

Being 5’9” and weighing 174 pounds, he’s obviously not the biggest player out there. Using the extra time in juniors to improve the physical aspect of his game could help him for years to come.

He doesn’t need to be able to knock people out, but being able to finish checks and gaining muscle will be important, especially since he’ll play for John Tortorella.

Vitaly Abramov will be one of the prospects to keep an eye on this season. If he doesn’t make the NHL roster this year, he’ll likely take someone’s job next year.
