The Kovalchuk sweepstakes are off and running with the Columbus Blue Jackets being mentioned in talks to acquire the Russian. This is not going to happen.

The offseason gives folks plenty of time to speculate and spread stories. I know, the Stanley Cup Finals are still in action, but for the Columbus Blue Jackets, it’s the offseason. And a crazy story has been spreading involving the CBJ and Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Russian winger is reportedly looking at making a return to the NHL. The former #1 overall pick is 34-years-old and his contract in the KHL has expired. He is more than likely stirring up the return rumors to get a better deal in the KHL. But lets say he is actually looking to return to North America.

Kovalchuk’s rights are still owned by the Devils so any return would have to be approved by New Jersey. The most likely path to the NHL is a sign and trade.

Of course the Columbus Blue Jackets could use a great scoring threat like Kovalchuk. But there is no way Kovalchuk ends up in Columbus next season.

3 Reasons Why Not

First off, Kovalchuk is probably doing this to drive up his price in the KHL. He enjoys playing in his native Russia and is a star there. He would not have to worry about not playing in the Olympics in 2018 if he stayed in the KHL either.

Secondly, the Devils aren’t going to trade away Kovalchuk within their division. Sure, the Devils are rebuilding and won’t be competitive for a few years. Still, you don’t trade an asset like that to a team you have to play six times a year.

Finally it doesn’t make any cap sense for the CBJ. Kovalchuk is going to demand at least $5 million a season. Alexander Radulov posted similar numbers his last season in the KHL before signing with Montreal to Kovalchuk’s. Radulov signed for $5.75 million last season. Ilya is four years older than Radulov so his salary may be closer to the $4-$5 million a year. Still a massive number. The Jackets just can’t afford a player like that Kovalchuk.

Enjoy the rumors and speculation. It’s fun! But just know that Ilya Kovalchuk will not be playing in Columbus next season.
