Blue Jackets Recall Prout and Goloubef

With Fedor Tyutin out of the Blue Jackets lineup due to an ankle injury, there is an absence at the blue line. To fill this gap, the Jackets have recalled defensemen Dalton Prout and Cody Goloubef from their AHL affiliate, Springfield. With Tyutin normally serving on the top defensive line alongside Jack Johnson, this call-up is a good chance for both of these young players to prove to the coaching staff that they deserve a permanent spot on the Columbus roster.

Here are the NHL and AHL stats for Prout and Goloubef this season:

Most Jackets fans, when asked about these two players, would automatically point out Prout as the most aggressive, physical player. And, certainly, that is reflected in the number of penalty minutes the two have received playing for Columbus in the NHL this year, Prout having 27 and Goloubef only 2. However, if you look at the penalty minutes the two have received in the AHL, Goloubef takes the cake with 75 PIM. This discrepancy is likely due to the fact that Goloubef has only seen ice time in 3 NHL games with Columbus this season. Overall, I  think we can expect some physicality from these two boys as they join the club in New Jersey tomorrow night.

In terms of offense, these two haven’t produced much in the NHL this season. They combine for two NHL points, both assists from Prout. But that’s not bad for two defensemen who have, combined, only played in 30 NHL games this season, with Prout in 27 and Goloubef making an appearance in only 3. In the AHL however, Goloubef has been an offensive powerhouse. He has 22 points in 48 games with Springfield this season. Only two Blue Jackets players have more than 22 points this season: James Wisniewski has 35 and Fedor Tyutin has 24. Granted, those are NHL totals not AHL totals, but I think it is fair to say we will see Goloubef contribute some offense to the Jackets blue line.

As the Columbus roster gears up for the final push to the playoffs this season, Dalton Prout and Cody Goloubef are in prime position to prove their worth to this team and it’s fans. It remains to be seen how they will perform, but here’s hoping they make a positive difference for themselves and for the team.
