In the first segment of this series, we looked at the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadians. Now, lets take a look at a couple more of the Original Six, the Red Wings and the Rangers.
In my opinion, the beer that most compares with the Detroit Red Wings is any of the following Ice beers. The Strohs Brewing Co was founded in Detroit in 1850 by Bernhard Stroh after immigrating from Germany. In 1994 Strohs introduced Schlits Ice, Schlitz Ice light, Old Milwaukee Ice, Bull Ice, and Schaefer Ice. With all the ice going on here, its gotta be a perfect match for the Red Wings. Sadly, none of the labels have a flying octopus on them. But they should.
Ok, now lets look at the New York Rangers, another Original Six team. What beer best matches the Rangers? Any guesses? How about Rheingold? It was hugely popular in the 1950’s, then disappeared much like the Rangers until 1999 when it made a comeback. Famous for their “Miss Rheingold ” pageant, which originally featured ladies in ball gowns and white gloves. The modern version of the pageant featured ladies with tattoos and piercings. You’ve come a long way baby.
As a side note to you New Yorkers….Thanks for banning Canadian beer in most New York bars during the USA/Canada Olympic game. Hats off to you.
