The game started off like it was going to be a great end to 2013. However, the semi dominance of the Columbus Blue Jackets only lasted through the first period. The Blue Jackets played well overall. The exception to that is the continuation of taking bad penalties and horrible play on the kill. Two games in a row now, the Jackets have allowed 5 overall goals and 3 power play goals The Colorado Avalanche were 3 for 3 on the power play.
Lately the Jackets have struggled with the penalty kill. All areas of special teams have been quite lethargic, especially when on the power play. In all honesty, if there was an option to decline penalties, I think that would be a good idea. However, Columbus had a few very good chances to cash in on the man advantage but just couldn’t finish.
There were three bright spots to me. First, Ryan Johansen continued to increase his career high in goals when he tallied his 16th goal. He also recorded an assist on Foligno’s goal. Another great thing was Nick Foligno continuing his great year by scoring his 11th goal of the season. For me the brightest thing of the night was Boone Jenner scoring his 5th goal. Jenner is definitely making all of Boone’s Goons proud! He is going to be one of the most important pieces to the Jackets future along with Cam Atkinson and Ryan Johansen.
The most important thing for the rest of the year will be to stay out of the penalty box! When you give up so many power plays you will have a hard time keeping the puck out of the net. On the power play the Jackets need to finish their chances. The Blue Jackets will look to get back to their winning ways. The Jackets open up 2014 with a trip to the desert to take in the 20-10-9 Phoenix Coyotes. The game is January 2nd at 9PM on Fox Sports Ohio.
