Columbus Blue Jackets vs Pittsburgh Penguins: Three Stars

Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sports

The Columbus Blue Jackets played great for the first two periods, but ran out of gas in the third.  The Pittsburgh Penguins won by a score of 5-3.  The Blue Jackets took 6 penalties, and the Penguins capitalized on 3 of them. Games aren’t won by taking multiple penalties. I had high hopes for this game through the first two periods, but when the Penguins scored three times in the third period, I knew it was over.

Let’s take a look at who I believe the three stars of the game were from the Blue Jackets.

Third Star: Ryan Murray

Murray gets my third star yet again.  He is consistently good and doesn’t make that many stupid mistakes.  He outsmarted Sidney Crosby tonight and that is hard to do.  Without him, who knows where this game would have ended up.

Second Star: Boone Jenner

Holy moly, what a hit on Robert Bortuzzo.  Be sure to listen to the announcer.  Bortuzzo actually flew through the air!

First Star: Corey Tropp

Tropp scored the second goal of the game and his second goal overall for the Blue Jackets. No one expected Corey to dangle like that, which is what made it such an electrifying goal. He was awarded the third star of the game from the media in the “official” stars of the game, and rightfully so.
