Minnesota Wild @ Columbus Blue Jackets

Nationwide Arena, Columbus, OH
Tonight the Columbus Blue Jackets will try to get their first consecutive wins since before Halloween. They will have to do that with former backup, and now official interim starting goaltender Curtis McElhinney between the pipes, as Sergei Bobrovsky will be out 4-5 weeks with the groin strain. Despite the uncertainty in net, the Jackets seem confident and it was reported the practices have been difficult this week. November was marked by the bipolar “win one, lose one” trend, and the Blue Jackets, as well as Coach Todd Richards, want that trend to end.
The Jackets are coming off a 1-0 shutout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, a game in which the Jackets lagged behind in the first period, but were able to contain Tampa Bay’s offense. After the first period, the game was all Jackets, and they played one of their best second periods so far this season. Bobrovsky was injured in the third, and McElhinney was able to finish off the shutout.
The Wild snapped a four game losing streak on Monday with a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Prior to that, they had given up 3 goals in all four losses. Last night against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Wild gave up 3 unanswered goals in the 2nd and 3rd period, which gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead a quarter of the way through the period. Minnesota answered back with two goals of their own, and Marco Scandella‘s would prove to be the game winner with 1:48 left in the game.
Tonight is the first of two match ups between the Blue Jackets and the Wild for the 2013-14 season. They will not meet again until March 15th. Tonight we will see if the Jackets can overcome the loss of Bobrovsky and build upon the win over Tampa Bay. While it was great to see them shutout the Lightning, that win will seem even better if the Blue Jackets can get another one tonight against Minnesota.
Next up we will take a look at some stats for tonight’s game, some game notes, and the Union and Blue Song For the Game!
