Columbus Blue Jackets Three Stars Of The Weekend

The Columbus Blue Jackets played once on Friday and once on Saturday.  As the recent pattern dictated, they won against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday but lost to the Boston Bruins on Saturday.  Let’s take a look at the players who I think were the three stars of these games.

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

Third Star: Matt Calvert

Matty Hustle is gritty, which is why I like him.  He’s not afraid to battle for the puck, put his body on the line, and throw a few punches when needed.  He assisted with two goals during the Edmonton game and showed Brad Marchand who’s boss during the Boston game.  Boy am I glad he’s back.

Second Star: Ryan Murray

He blocked 5 shots against the Boston Bruins.  FIVE! And they don’t shoot slowly.  He had the second most ice time of the weekend and played a significant amount on the power play and penalty kill.  He doesn’t contribute much offensively, but someone has to be the consistent defender, and this season it is him.  He had the trainers put tape on his shoulder during the Boston game, so hopefully he’s staying healthy.  The Blue Jackets really need him right now.

First Star: Ryan Johansen

He had the most points for the weekend.  He had the most shots for the weekend.  He had the best face off percentage for the weekend.  Everyone in CBJ world is talking about him, and rightfully so.  He has grown as a player exponentially and grown as a person.  His interviews are much more mature.  There are less “ummms” and “I don’t knows.”  He could become the next Rick Nash, who knows.

Honorable Mentions: Jack Skille and Corey Tropp (Hooray new guy!)
