Columbus Blue Jackets Vs Montreal Canadiens: U&B Three Stars

The Columbus Blue Jackets lost in the shootout to the Montreal Canadiens.  It’s the same story yet again.  The effort seemed to be there, but they just couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.  Here are the Union and Blue Three Stars of the evening.

Third Star: Jared Boll/Artem Anisimov/Nikita Nikitin

These three share a star because they scored the weirdest goal of the season so far. Take a look at it in the video below (2:00 mark)

From Franklin Steele at Fansided.com

Nikita Nikitin takes a pass, walks in from the blue  line and winds up to fire a bomb from the top of the left circle. He hits a divot in the ice or something and eats it in the process. The puck totally vanishes at that point and somehow ends up behind Montreal Canadiens netminder Peter Budaj.

OK, so the puck doesn’t vanish. Artem Anisimov takes a whack at it after Nikitin faceplants, and it pinballs through traffic and ends up in the net. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as a bad shot. At least in Anisimov’s case, since he managed to score here. Nikitin just looked silly in his attempt to get the puck to the net, so maybe there is such a thing as a bad shot after all.

One of the oddest looking goals you’ll see all year to be sure.

Second Star: Blake Comeau

His stat sheet doesn’t show it, but he played one of his best games for the Columbus Blue Jackets.  He took 4 shots, which was the most for any Blue Jackets player.  He also had 6 huge hits on the evening, which very well could have kept the Habs from scoring.

First Star: Curtis McElhinney

McBackup kept the Blue Jackets in the game last night.  He made 38 of 40 saves and had some highlight reel worthy ones, too.  He had a .950 save percentage for the evening.  He currently has a 1.94 goals against average and a .936 save percentage on the season.
