Columbus Blue Jackets VS Washington Capitals: Three Stars

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Columbus Blue Jackets lost to the Washington Capitals in overtime due to a goal from Alexander Ovechkin. The Blue Jackets scored the first (Dubinsky), fourth (Jared Boll), and fifth (Cam Atkinson) goals of the game, but the Capitals pulled it out in overtime.  “Jackets Killer” Martin Erat had one assist on the ice and was 50% in the faceoff circle.  With only 15 minutes of ice time, he did not do as much damage to the Blue Jackets as his nickname says.

Onto the 3 stars of the evening

Third Star: Jared Boll

He did it!  He finally got his first point of the season with a goal from James Wisniewski and Sean Collins. Granted, it was a deflection shot, but that doesn’t matter when awarding points.  Boll also laid out some pretty good hits, especially his hits on Mike Green and Alexander Ovechkin.  One thing to note is that he appeared to shake of an injury to his hip.  Somthing to keep an eye on.  Hopefully this game will bring him out of the hole he has been in lately.

Second Star: Ryan Murray

I just can’t get enough of this kid. He is making great plays on the ice and is consistent every game. He appears to “have more of a clue on defense than James Wisniewski” (credit: Mike Majeski).  Murray had more ice time than Nikita Nikitin, Dalton Prout, Jared Boll, Derek Mackenzie, Mark Letestu and Blake Comeau, all veterans from last year.  He was -1 for the night with 1 hit, 1:57 on the power play and 1:17 on the penalty kill. Not too bad for a rookie.

First Star: Cam Atkinson

What a man that Cam is.  He scored on a breakaway, putting it right through Braden Holtby’s 5 hole.  He had one goal, four shots, one take away, and 18:16 minutes on the ice.

Cam #Atkinson is made out of 50% sunshine, 30% optimism, and 20% good old-fashioned midwestern decency (despite being from Connecticut) #CBJ

It seems Cam is finding his way out of his playing slump.  Let’s hope he continues this throughout the season.
