Columbus Blue Jackets Vs New York Islanders: U&B 3 Stars

Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sports

The Columbus Blue Jackets finally broke the five game winning streak!  The collective sigh of relief was almost audible from my couch.  The fans were happy with that win and the team was happy with that win.  This is one of the hardest “U&B 3 Stars” that I’ve written because there were actually 5 players that stood out to me. Third Star: Cam Atkinson Goal, 6 shots, +3 Cam went six games with zero points, and he finally broke the streak!  He had twice as many shots as Marian Gaborik and the most of any player on the ice.  His small size and speed makes him an unusual, great hockey player. Let’s hope that he finally broke the seal and we can see some of the old Cam back on the ice. Second Star: Ryan Johansen Goal, 2 assists, 2 shots This was the first 3 point game of his NHL career!  He scored on a nice feed from Dubinsky to pull the Jackets to a 2-1 lead (the Jackets went on to win 5-2).  He also had the secondary assist on RJ Umberger’s game winning goal and the primary assist on Cam Atkinson’s beautiful wrister.  The kid is good.

First Star: Brandon Dubinsky Power play goal, 2 assists 2 shots Now for the real star of the night.  Dubinsky acted as a leader on the ice and came away with three points because of it.  He scored the first goal of the night and set the game in motion.  He had the second most time on ice of any forward (behind John Tavares) and the second most hits (behind Matt Martin).  Todd Richards validated him as a leader in his post game interview.  Dubinsky refused to give a post game interview, which is fine with me.  He left everything on the ice. Note: Sergei Bobrovsky had an assist! (Which is more points than Marian Gaborik had last night)
