The Match Up:

The Jackets get another chance at redemption tonight against the visiting Ottawa Senators. After dropping two games in the home and home series against the Metro Division leading Penguins, the Jackets will find themselves in a much more even match up. Ottawa is currently 6th in the Atlantic Division with 12 points (the Jackets are also in 6th in the Metropolitan Division, with 10 points). Ottawa has struggled out of the gate, but statistically they are a good team. They are averaging 32.2 shots per game (5th overall) and 3.00 goals per game (12th). However, they are allowing an average of 3.14 goals per game (4th most in the NHL). When looking at puck possession, Columbus is better with a CF% of 50.1 (15th) versus Ottawa’s 48.3 CF% (22nd).

While a long break in the action could be beneficial to a team (especially one with injuries), the Blue Jackets looked lost against the Penguins. It appears the time off had a negative effect on the chemistry that Coach Todd Richards is attempting to build. Fortunately, the Jackets come into tonight’s game with a much more manageable two days between games, so hopefully they will look like a team that has played 13 games.

Columbus needs to find a way to dictate the flow of the game, something that Pittsburgh successfully did in both games. On Saturday, the Penguins possessed the puck the majority of the game, and pretty much shut down every attempt that the Jackets made to generate offense. Much was made about the shutout performance of Jeff Zatkoff, but the Pittsburgh defense and the inability of  the CBJ to generate offense played a big role in it. With Ottawa allowing the 4th most goals per game, the Jackets will have a better chance of generating offense and getting scoring chances.

Next we’ll take a look at some of the players on Ottawa that the Jackets will need to watch out for, as well as the Keys to the Matchup.
