The Red Wings took the lead early in the 1st period, with Daniel Alfredsson scoring a power play goal with only seconds left in the penalty. Throughout the first, the Jackets had several wonderful chances to score, however Jonas Gustavsson had other plans, stopping all 18 of the Jackets shots on goal.
The most impressive drive by the Blue Jackets in the 1st period came with 12:35 left in the first when Mark Letestu had a beautiful pass right in the slot to Boone Jenner. Unfortunately, the puck went right into the glove of Gustavsson. The Red Wings only had 7 shots on goal in the first period.
End of the first period: 1-0 Detroit
The 2nd period started off with lots of intensity from both sides. The game was tied early in the period when Cam Atkinson made an amazing individual effort against three Detroit defenders, finding the net off of a rebound of his own shot.
However, it didn’t take long for Todd Bertuzzi to get the Red Wings back in the lead, scoring a power play goal with Derek Mackenzie in the box for an interference call. The game entered the 3rd period with the Wings up 2-1.
End of the second period: 2-1 Detroit
The third period was all defense, or at least a lack of offense. The Jackets seemed to be having major trouble getting a decent shot on goal in the first half of the period. Unfortunately, the struggles continued and the Dead Wings were able to hold off the Jackets and get out of the game with a win.
End of the game: 2-1 Detroit
In the end, the two goals that the Wings were able to walk away with were definitely not pretty goals, but they were power play goals, and they count nonetheless.
The Blue Jackets need to have short memories and look ahead to the next game against Montreal on Thursday. They cannot afford to let this game linger in the back of their minds.
