The Columbus Blue Jackets travel down to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum for their first away game of the season tonight. Like the Blue Jackets, the Islanders opened up their regular season play last night, they were the away team in the contest, but only had to travel the short distance to New Jersey. The last time the Islanders and the Blue Jackets faced off was the last game of the Jackets 2011-12 season, Columbus won by a score of 7-3.
The Islander won the game by a final score of 4-3, a shootout was needed to decide the winner though. Michael Grabner scored twice and added an assist for the Islanders in their win, and center Frans Nielsen also netted a goal. The Islanders faced Martin Brodeur in net for the Devils. In the net for the Islanders was veteran goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who made 26 saves for the shootout win.
The New York Islanders are a team on the rise, and like Columbus learned last night, no team should be taken lightly. With a young team with the likes of John Tavares, Josh Bailey, and Kyle Okposo, you can’t underestimate the Islanders. Nabokov has been clutch for the team too, which have gone through quite a struggle to find a number one goalie since the demise of Rick DiPietro.
The Blue Jackets need to bounce back from the tough loss against the Calgary Flames. More importantly, Columbus needs to give the fans the first win of the season tonight to restore hope for the season. Not that the whole city is down on the team, but we won’t wait around long for the first win of the season.
Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm tonight in New York. The game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio. Stop back to U&B after the game for post game reaction and the three stars of the night.
