5. Phoenix Coyotes

Background Story: For the past 4 seasons it appeared the Coyotes were destined to move and were on a farewell tour. However, each season the NHL intervened and kept the team on life support. Now, new ownership has steeped forward and it appears that for now, the Coyotes are going to stay put. With all of the rumors surrounding the Coyotes last season, I found myself tuning into their games when I could and they actually were a fun team to watch. I have always felt that the Coyotes and the Jackets are very similar: loyal fan-bases that have had to deal with hardship, poor play, and have been on the receiving end of the same jabs from trolling fans.

Star Power/Personnel: The Coyotes lack the type of marquee player that will get them national attention, but there are several players of interest. Throughout the ownership issues, Shane Doan has spoken out in favor of the team and has served as the voice of the players. Doan supports the team, his fellow players, and the fans in Phoenix. The Coyotes have one of the better D-cores in the NHL, which includes Keith Yandle and Oliver Eckman-Larsson. Former Blue Jackets on the roster include Rostislav Klesla and Antoine Vermette.

Aesthetics: Most will argue that the Coyotes uniforms are the NHLs version of sleepy-time tea. And for the most part I have to agree, there really isn’t much going on aesthetically, but I like them. While their original jerseys were wild and screamed “new 90s franchise”, their redesign transformed them into a modern classic style team.
