The Columbus Blue Jackets have quite a few big deals to make with players whose contracts expire and will be set to become unrestricted free agents or restricted free agents come July. One player who may not be at the top of the list and could potentially be on the cusp, is Vinny Prospal. If signed, he will be entering his 18th season in the league and 3rd with the Blue Jackets.
This past season Prospal led the team in points with 30, was tied with three others for the most assists, 18, and was second in goals scored with 12. I would say that is pretty good production from an aging veteran player. To get a full grasp on Prospal’s recent production, here are his full season stats from 2011-12: 16 goals, 39 assists, for 55 points total (played in all 82 games).
Can Prospal continue producing these type of numbers for another year? Maybe two? I highly doubt he would get more than a one year contract, especially considering he has only signed one year contracts with the Blue Jackets. One fan expressed his feelings via Twitter about Prospal. Clint Linn thinks that Prospal still has more left in the tank for the Blue Jackets. Here is what he had to say…

One aspect of the situation hasn’t even been mentioned about Prospal, his age and experience may come in handy next season. It is always smart to have a player in the locker room with the type of seasoning that Prospal has (seasoning is always clutch). If the Blue Jackets make the playoffs (really want to say when, but wont jinx it), he will be a very valuable asset to the team with all the playoff experience he holds.
I think it would be in the best interest of the Columbus Blue Jackets to resign Vinny Prospal for another season. He has showed for the last two seasons that he can still contribute points, and can continue to help move this young team in the right direction.
A special thanks goes out to Clint for allowing me to use his quote.
