Lockout Day 73- Grapeshots 11-28-12

Whoda thunk that 73 days ago we’d still be showing lockout as the big symbol of the NHL?

Will this be the 2012-2013 picture for the year’s results? Picture by gary2

When we entered the lockout, it’s true we had no true expectations, but most of the neigh sayers even agreed we would be playing hockey right after Thanksgiving. Well, according to my stomach which is still recovering from the festivities, it’s after Thanksgiving and the NHL is not even close to playing hockey.

News was just released that the sides would enter mediation. Mediation, if you don’t understand it is simply each side talks to a 3rd party to explain their positions and thinking. Then the 3rd party explains what they heard back to each of the primary parties. There is nothing binding. There is a little hope that because the mediators don’t have an ax to grind that they actually hear what the parties are saying and can explain it to the other parties. All in all, it’s a bit like kissing you sister, nothing happens.

But, don’t hold your breath. Both sides are smart enough to understand the issues and thoughts of the other side. But, I suppose it is progress of a sort.

There are still a few irate fans, but many of the NHL fans have sunk into apathy. Fans are finding that there are other things to do beside living and dying for “their” team. There is folk lore that after the last lockout the birth rate in Canada to a dramatic jump. So I guess there are other things to do at night. In fact, do you suppose we could get the NHL subsidized by Obamacare as a birth control measure and get back to hockey?

The NHL has been very careful to cancel season games in roughly 2 week increments. but the decision is fast approaching on when it will be feasible to start a partial season vs canceling the entire season. If the 2005 year is a guide, we have about 1 month to sign an agreement so play could start in mid January. But based on the far flung players and their semi commitments, I think hockey needs to start with the new year of forget it. But I’d be interested in what you guys think, thus we’ll start a poll on this very question. Please go the the poll section on the very left bottom of the posting and let’s vote.
