Since joining Twitter and ‘meeting’ fans of other teams, I have been amazed at how different fanbases come together to discuss hockey, amuse each other during the off-season, and lately, join fantasy leagues. I’m been amazed and humbled at the outpouring of love and financial support shown to one of our our, CJ Shepard, who lost all her belongings in the aftermath of Hurrican Irene.
I’ve watched 3 Twitter romances bloom and turn into 2 engagements and 1 seriously talking about engagement and these are couples from different states and a Can/Am couple who have survived a severe long distance relationship. These are fans from distinct fan bases, although, I am amused to see 2 of these relationships between Jackets and Devils fans. I already knew the Jackets’ fans were the best, but what is in the water in New Jersey?????
This isn’t a Twitter thing or a social media thing, but a hockey thing. Hockey fans love the sport and love other fans (okay, for the sake of argument, I’m even including the RedWings fans….*wince*). For the most part, I’ve seen friendly ribbing going on within the confines of Nationwide before and during the game (warning, opposing fans, it isn’t good form to make fun of any team…I’m looking at you, Pens fans. Your day is coming!) and good natured bets being made on the Internets.
Fellow fans have been kind to me, checked in with me, cheered me up, and been around when I’ve been down. They’ve cheerfully educated me, given me grief over last year’s season, congratulated me on off-season moves, and asked questions about my boys. I’ve gone from being somewhat bewildered to just acknowledging that these folks are the best ever.
So I start a new season, a bright, shiny new season when anything is possible, with the thought of the team doing better than last year, but looking at all the fun I expect to have with my fellow fans. I am already anticipating some good talks, good company, and a few games taken in with fun people. Thank you, hockey fans, for not only embracing this newcomer to the sport, but also for being yourselves, quirky and lovely as you are.
